Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha is one of the finest backwater sites of Kerala. Its claim to fame, however is the famous boat race held every year and telecast prominently by the national media. The place attracts visitors mainly during winters. Alleppey is also famous for its coir products. Thousands of people swarm to Annamada Kayal during August-September to witness the boat race christened as Nehru Trophy in the backwaters. Almost 120 competitors in each boat resembling snakes burn their calories to win the top honour. The two storied Krishnapuram temple is also flocked by devotees. Gajendra Miksham, the largest mural painting is displayed in the temple premises. Ambalapuzha Temple of Lord Krishna is another beautiful temple here. apart from apart from the magnificent backwaters, Kottamkulangara Mahavishnu Temple, Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple and Mullackal Temple are widely visited. St. Andrews church is another architectural delight. Appelley is connected by national highway 47 with most major places of Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is at Kochi at a distance of 64 kms.

.Kuttanad - Rice Bowl of Kerala This is the one of the places in the world where farming is done below sea level (1.5 -2 metres below sea level). Inland waterways that flow above the land level is an amazing feature of this land. Kuttanad is the heart of the backwaters of Kerala. Pathiramanal (Backwaters) This little island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom. Legend states that a young Brahmin dived into the Lake Vembanad to perform his evening ablutions and the water made way for land to rise from below, thus creating this enchanting island of Pathiramanal (Sands of Midnight). This little island is a favourite haunt for hundreds of migratory birds from different parts of the world. It is accessible only by boat. 

Nehru Trophy Boat Race The most wonderful sight in Alappuzha is the Nehru trophy Boat race that is held every year on the second Saturday of August. This was started in 1952 when India's first Prime Minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Alappuzha, and inaugurated the function in which the gigantic snake boats with over 100 rowers in each raced one another. From then on, year after year, the boat race has grown into Alappuzha`s most important event.

Alappuzha Beach A famous beach and picnic spot with a children park and boating facilities for entertainment.  The old lighthouse also adds to the beauty of this beach and the pier, which extends into the sea is over 137 years old.

QST and R BLOCK Kayal (Backwaters)
These regions are wonders of the agricultural engineering skills of Kerala and remind the tourist of the famous dikes of Holland. Extensive areas of land have been reclaimed from the backwaters and are protected by dikes built around. A leisurely cruise along the canals that surround these kayal's is a memorable experience.

It was built in the 18th century during the reign of Marthanda Varma, which displays typical characteristics of Kerala architecture. It also has one of the largest mural paintings is the Gajendra Maksham. Krishnapuram Place is situated 47kms from Alappuzha.

Karumadi
Only three kilometers east of Alleppey is the village of Karumadi. There is a large black granite statue there that is very famous. This sculpture is known as the Karumadi Kuttan. This statue is a left over remnant from the days that the Buddha religion was very popular in the region. Historians say that this black Buddha was carved in either the 9th or 10th century. Nowadays, Hindu is the more popular religion to belong to, but that does not change the beauty of this Buddha statue. The fact that it is made from black quartz makes it even more unusual, since quartz is normally associated with a gray color.

Krishnapuram Palace
The Krishnapuram Palace was built during the reign of Marthanda Varma, a Travancore king. This 18th century building was built with two-stories and was created with the traditional Kerala architectural features which include gabled roofs, dormer windows and narrow corridors. This particular palace is especially famous for its mural paintings as well as its architecture. One of the biggest mural paintings in all of Kerala is located here. This mural is called Gajendra Moksham, which when translated means The redemption of the elephant. A museum of antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes is also found there at the palace.

Pathiramannal Pathiramannal is a small island found in the Vembanad Lake near Alleppey. This magnificent location can only be traveled to on a boat. Its remote location adds to the intrigue for those that especially love to explore. Birdwatchers love to travel to this breathtaking location is hundreds of rare migratory birds like to gather there. It is possible to see such birds as golden-backed woodpeckers, night herons, kingfishers, paradise fly-catchers, egrets, bulbuls, shrikes, morning doves, crow pheasants, and drongos. A visit to this remarkable location will be memorable for the rest of your life.
